Olean Public Library November Events

Monday, November 1, 2010 at 7:00 pm– What I Never Told You: A Daughter Traces the Wartime Imprisonment of Her Father by Candy Kyler Brown

Salamanca resident John Kyler at 20 years of age became a ball turret gunner on a B-17 in WWII, and was shot down and taken Prisoner of War by the German Army.  His death at age 81 might have left his story unknown, but for the decision by his daughter and wife to uncover the truth. Together they retraced his steps, paralleling his route and resurrecting his deeply buried memories. Candy Kyler Brown was born and raised in Salamanca, NY.  Her last 6 years have been dedicated to researching and writing about her father’s wartime experience. Signed copies of the book will be available after the program, hard covers $20 & soft $15.

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 7:00 pm—Poetry and Short Story Reading by St. Bonaventure creative writing group The Arm. The creative writers—mostly journalism and mass communication majors—are members of a student writing group at St. Bonaventure called The Arm. They will read an eclectic collection of original poems, short stories, and essays.

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 7:00 pm– There’s Always Room for Jell-O: the Story of America’s Most Famous Dessert by Lynne Belluscio, Executive Director of the LeRoy Historical Society, LeRoy, NY

In 1897, Pearle Wait, a carpenter in LeRoy, NY introduced a powdered fruit flavored gelatin that his wife named Jell-O. This is the story of the history and mystery of America’s Most Famous Dessert, how it was advertised, which flavors were introduced and which ones failed. This is also the saga of the Waits and the Woodwards and why Jell-O left LeRoy.

Lynne Belluscio, has served as Executive Director of the LeRoy Historical Society for over 20 years.  She has also served as Chairman of the Western New York Association of Historical Agencies, and President of the Association of Living History, Farms and Agricultural Museums.  Most recently she has served on the Council of Affiliates of the American Association of Museums and has been a representative to the European Outdoor Air Museum Association.

Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 1:00 pm @ —Book Talk by local author Fred Mascioni with illustrator Danielle Cassie Mascioni. The Very Tiny Tree by Fred Mascioni and illustrated by Danielle Cassie Mascioni. This book is a wonderful story about four young siblings who discover and nurture a tiny seedling as it grows into a grand tree as they themselves are nurtured and grow into adults. This children’s book is authored by a father and illustrated by his daughter. Signed copies will be available after the program for $5.00.
